The Clergy Connection

A Program of the Regional Youth/Adult Substance Abuse Project (RYASAP)

WHAT IS THE CLERGY CONNECTION?

The Clergy Connection is a gathering of concerned clergy and lay people of the Greater Bridgeport Region, working together to expand the capacity of the region's clergy to respond to the prevelance of substance abuse and its related issues.

Comprised of clergy from Bridgeport, Easton, Fairfield, Monroe, Stratford and Trumbull, the Clergy Connection is serving as a forum where the unique voices of the clergy speak out about these issues.

HOW DID IT BEGIN?

The Clergy Connection is an initiative of the Regional Youth/Adult Substance Abuse Project (RYASAP).

Its first meeting was held in December 1991, and since then, gatherings have continued on a quarterly basis.

The Clergy Connection has coalesced into an energized, bonded group dedicated to clergy involvement and community change.

WHAT ARE ITS GOALS?

  • Increase the skills and the knowledge of clergy in the areas of substance abuse through trainings, workshops and seminars

  • Address issues related to substance abuse such as crime, violence, domestic abuse, school failure, adolescent pregnancy and suicide

  • Build bridges between faith communities and promote fellowship among clergy

  • Support an interfaith, interdenominational, regional network of clergy to advocate for issues critical to clergy

  • Strengthen ties with human service providers to increase the capacity of the clergy to more efficiently utilize these resources

  • Promote community awareness about clergy involvement in the struggle against substance abuse
